Haryana Panchayat Elections 2015 are postponed until
the Supreme Court decides the validity of educational qualifications for the
contestants.
State government advocate Attorney General Mukul
Rohatagi told Supreme Court that the election could not go with uncertainty
looming large over the qualifications. He also told the court that it would be
better if the elections were held with clear cut norms approved by the Supreme
Court.
After this stand taken by the state government, the SC
acknowledged that the present poll schedule had become irrelevant.
The development has taken place in the wake of a
petition by some of the aspirants affected by the fresh norms for contesting
the Panchayat Election.
The SC has already stayed implementation of the new
norms for the current elections.
Under the fresh norms, the general category contestants
must required matriculation, while women and SC candidates should have cleared
8th standard. The educational requirement for SC category was fifth pass.
Candidates have also no due (electricity bills, repayment
of loans) also having functional toilets at home.
The next hearing of this case will be on October 7.
